This film follows the extraordinary story of stuttering children struggling to break out of their isolation and learn to speak. Stuttering, also known as stammering in the United Kingdom, is a speech disorder in which the flow of speech is disrupted by involuntary repetitions and prolongations of sounds, syllables, words or phrases; and involuntary silent pauses or blocks in which the stutterer is unable to produce sounds. The term stuttering is most commonly associated with involuntary sound repetition, but it also encompasses the abnormal hesitation or pausing before speech, referred to by stutterers as blocks, and the prolongation of certain sounds, usually vowels. Much of what constitutes “stuttering” cannot be observed by the listener; this includes such things as sound and word fears, situational fears, anxiety, tension, self-pity, stress, shame, and a feeling of “loss of control” during speech. The emotional state of the individual who stutters in response to the stuttering often constitutes the most difficult aspect of the disorder. No single, exclusive cause of stuttering is known.

I’m a person who stutters. I’ve been stuttering since I was 6 years old. Over the years it’s been really hard for me to speak. But I believe I have improved alot in my stuttering. I advertise to people that i stutter and try to use the speech techniques, so I can feel more in control of my stuttering. I’m glad I have friends who stutter, so it’s like a support group. I’m so happy this film was made. I wish I could go to the UK to talk to the people there who stammer.
Some singers are stutters and singing is a kind of therapy. Thanks of singing , they have improved their “stutter”.
Bless all of you guys and i wish the best of luck on improving your stammering.
I am a stutterer and I feel for each one of them. My dream too is to be a film actor and I also want to be a motivational speaker for people who stutter. May God bless you all and Jesus loves you just the way you are.
I had a classmate in high school who stuttered like the guy in this video, the muscle spasms.. I felt really bad for him because everyone made fun of him and talked shit about him. I befriended him and he turned out to be a great guy. Oh and FYI dont finish a stutterers sentances…they hate that shit, I stuttered for years and i grew out of it thankfully. It was a daily struggle to say one fuckin word…
(i swear this is true) the people from the bbc who were making this progam and i had a interview for to be in this proggame
I stammer to,its horrible, the worst is peoples reactions and what they think decides if Im going to say something or not.
and then…. What happened?
parents have to stop thinking their kids need help if they have a stutter it will only make it worse, they have to accept it……the only way is to speak like a robot high on dope, but then you sound even more retarded
I’m 15 and i’ve got stutter problems for a long time. If you are a father and you stutter there is 30% chance that your child will get it too (must be a boy)
man this sucks so bad =( 5*
Getting help/therapy increases the chance to accept the stutter multiple times! I’m at therapy now, and after only 5 person to person meetings I’m way more comfortable to speak and it’s alot easier to speak fluintly.
It’s easy for people to not have patience for stutterers or even sit there and laugh at them because it looks like they’re having some sort of episode, but its very important to help stutterers along when they’re having trouble. I’m a stutterer and I always find that my stutter gets better when people show ACTIVE LISTENING. I hate it when people dont listen, but instead just look at you and watch you speak. That’s not listening. No wonder stutterers have problems when people don’t listen
Did the dad have a Mullet? :/
@kentishkickboxer this is channel 4, not bbc
i have a stutter to and its as annoying as fuck. im the only one in my school that has a stuttering problem. it makes me feel alone that ive never laid eyes on anyone that has stuttered thats not in my family.
im not trying to be a spammer, but if you any kind of speech problem, lisp, stutter, clutter, dysprosody, anything, then subscribe to the channel. im not trying to get subscribers, i just want to bring us all together, and make us not feel so alone.
what i have found out a bit is ..(cause i also stutter a bit.. but not as bad… i hope these great people should overcome it all)..that stuttering is caused by the way we breathe.what i try is to say music note.. like aaaaaaaaaa for a long time and then try to place words ON that note slowly.. and to long breathe continuously and not to stop breathin if i stuck up on a word or sentence.. this has helped me greatly and i have improved a LOT
I don’t know about other ppl who stutter, but when i stutter like that it is so draining!! i get really tired and dizzy, and the overall experience of stuttering is physically, mentally, and emotionally draining. On top of being really embarrassing…I do’nt do it as bad as these individuals but I know how it feels to go through moments like that and it is not fun.
Its so brave of him to say fuck u guys im doin the class any way!! lol good for him!!
@ArnieGrape21 lol, if they finish your words, and it is the right word, i don’t mind, cause it helps me, i hate it if they say the wrong word lol. all you can do is shake your head and carry on trying to say what you want
i stutter, but thankfully not as bad as the people in the video. however, people do take the micky out of me by imatateing me after i have stammered over a word and it is so annoying and hurtful because i try hard not to stammer then when it slips someone picks up on it and takes the mick!
